josephine

"josephine"... this is the song that started it all. well, not really, as i wrote "crying song", "field of flowers", and the start of "knight in shining armour" first. but this was the first song that i performed that i had written. and it was probably the most important song for me to write.

my first performance of this song was at an open mic known as the Black Walnut Folk Club, which i still love and go to from time to time. i came late to the open mic and almost didn't get to perform, but they probably felt sorry for me and let me perform one song (i had only prepared one)... the soundman at the club, Dan Hergott, thought it was an Elvis Costello song, which i would imagine is a pretty sweet compliment.

this song is the inevitable result of a boy who is obsessed with finding love, but afraid of taking the risks involved with finding that love. i have worshipped many different women, and almost always from a distance that keeps me from taking any risk and actually confronting them about my feelings. i think everyone can relate to the idea of wanting to find someone they can love who will actually love them back. anyone who has gotten to know me pretty well can tell you that i take it to an extreme... i used to think i needed to find "true love" to solve all of my problems (silly boy)... turns out i only needed to learn to love myself...

i've been asked plenty of times if "josephine" is actually a real person, and i think the best answer i can give them is "only if i let her become a real person again, inside of my head". there really is no josephine... it's the truth!

lyrics

so you say i'm a funny man
well, i'm so sick and tired of laughing
i'm hanging up my jester's cap
i wanna be your sistine chapel

no, i never kissed josephine.
no, i never kissed josephine.
in the summer of make-believe.
no, i never kissed josephine.

a cave where i can hide from expectations
a song that's sung by holy sirens
an echo of a heart, a heart that's beating
the dreams you have when you're not sleeping (cause i'm not sleeping)

no, i never kissed Josephine.
no, i never kissed Josephine.
in the summer of make-believe.
no, i never kissed Josephine.

josephine.
josephine?
jo, jo, jo, jo?
josephine.
