a stone's throw short of perfection
"a stone's throw short of perfection" is a song that was written with almost no real effort and took very little time, and almost no preplanning. i was thinking about "A Lack of Color" by Death Cab For Cutie, and how i wanted to write a song like that. i started strumming my guitar and did my best to channel whoever wrote that song [his name is Ben Gibbard, but i didn't know that at the time -TS].
i've always likened myself to a chameleon, in the sense that when i like what someone else does, i like to morph into them and become them a little bit. i'll talk the way they talk, or try to act the way they act (occasionally this results in a talent for imitating other singers really well or even other people's voices... but it's pretty hit and miss)... anyway, as this relates to songwriting, i'll sometimes feel like writing as though i am someone else and that is precisely what happened with this song.
i wrote the music to "stone's throw", known around camp as "ASTSOP" (because it's shorter to type/say), in about 10 or 15 minutes, the lyrics didn't take much longer and i didn't spend more than an hour or two writing everything else for that song. mixing the song, however, was horribly painful and i don't wish to redo that ever again.
